During August, 1917, 33rd Division were in the line on the extreme left of the Western Front, near Nieuport on the Belgian coast and on 16th August, the 20th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 19 Brigade took over the trenches in the Lombartzyde sector where they remained until relieved on 21st August when they moved back into support positions in the Redan from where they supplied working and carrying  parties.

On the night of 25/26th August the Geileide Brook Post, garrisoned by the 1st Scottish Rifles, was rushed and captured by the enemy and B Company was sent up in support. They established themselves in Nasal Trench and took over two other posts on the Geilied stream. During the fighting to secure these positions Harold Cockfield was killed.
